Tooth Extraction Services

What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure which completely removes a tooth from its socket. You will be given a local anesthesia prior to the extraction. Using specialized dental instruments, the tooth is loosened and carefully removed from its socket. Sometimes the procedure requires a bone graft and stitches to promote proper healing.

Why is Restorative Dentistry Important?

Restorative dental services help restore the primary oral functions of eating, speaking, and chewing. Restorative dentistry is about “restoring” and maintaining full oral function by fixing damaged, decayed teeth. These services are important as they give you the best chance of long-lasting oral health.

When is Tooth Extraction Recommended?

At the Smile Designer, our goal is to save your natural teeth whenever possible. However, there are times that damage has exceeded what restorative dentistry can repair and removal is necessary. Here are a few examples of situations that may require tooth extraction as the best way forward:

  • A fractured tooth
  • A severely decayed tooth
  • A dental trauma where tissue, ligaments, and bone are injured
  • An impacted tooth
  • Crowded overlapping teeth
  • Advanced gum disease

What Happens During Tooth Extractions?

Local anesthesia is administered to the surrounding gum tissue to numb the affected tooth. In some cases, sedation may be offered during tooth extractions, especially for those who experience dental anxiety.

Next, the tooth is loosened from the socket using specialized equipment. In some cases, an incision in your gums may be required, especially if the tooth is damaged and has broken near the gum line. Once the tooth can be secured, it is removed from the socket which is then cleaned and disinfected. A dental bone graft may be needed if there are signs of bone loss in your jaw. The procedure is completed with stitches, if necessary, to promote the healing process.

What Happens After Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction aftercare is important for the speedy healing and recovery after oral surgery. At Smile Designer, we supply you with a list of instructions and general guidelines to minimize your pain and get you quickly on the road to recovery. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Keep the socket clean and free of food debris by gently rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash 2-3 times per day. Brush and floss regularly but avoid brushing the tooth extraction site until it has healed.
  • If any medications have been prescribed, take all prescriptions exactly as directed. Over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may also be recommended.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and gym workouts for the first couple days as an elevated heart rate can cause post-operative bleeding and discomfort.

At Smile Designer, we understand that tooth extractions are not pleasant and that you may have questions and concerns about the procedure. Please feel free to contact us about any of our dental services. We want you to be comfortable, informed, and most of all, healthy. We look forward to seeing you at the Smile Designer.
