Periodontal Therapy

Periodontitis or gum disease can lead to more than just an unsightly smile—it can cause loss of teeth and eventually, if left untreated, other more serious health problems. Periodontitis is typically preceded by gingivitis, which is a gum inflammation due to bacteria found in the plaque. Bacteria in your mouth mixes with proteins and food byproducts to form a sticky film on your teeth. This film coats your teeth, gets under the gum line, and hardens into tartar which can lead to receding gums and gum disease.

Periodontal Disease Symptoms

The gums become inflamed due to the excess plaque in the mouth and tend to bleed during brushing. The excessive bacteria found in plaque attacks your mouth’s soft tissues. Left untreated, the gum tissue begins to pull away from the teeth, creating space for additional bacteria to lodge and build up. This build up can lead to infection. Early warning periodontal disease symptoms include red, swollen, or bleeding gums. You may also experience sores on the inside of the mouth and loose or sensitive teeth.

Periodontal Disease Stages

The progression of gum disease when left untreated begins with gingivitis and advances to the more severe condition of periodontitis:
1. Gingivitis – first stage of gum disease; red and swollen gums that are sensitive and may bleed during brushing.
2. Early Periodontitis – second stage of gum disease in which there is a slight loss of bone supporting the teeth.
3. Moderate Periodontitis – the third stage of progressing gum disease where more bone loss is evident, gum tissue is compromised, and teeth begin to loosen.
4. Advanced Periodontitis – the fourth and most critical stage of the disease; loose teeth, sore gums, biting and chewing are painful.
