Getting Braces – Some Helpful Tips

Orthodontics

OrthodonticsOrthodontics can transform your smile and give you confidence. While it’s a time to be excited about straight teeth and a beautiful smile, there are also several questions and concerns common to most patients. Here are a few answers that will help you feel more comfortable about that impending orthodontist appointment and the changes you are about to undergo.

Cost of Braces

Braces range in cost depending upon the type of braces you choose and the degree of misalignment of your teeth. The more adjustments your dentist must perform to align your teeth, the more you can expect to pay.

Metal braces are the most common and most affordable option. Typical costs for metal braces are anywhere from $3,000 to $7,000. Ceramic braces are made of a translucent, clear material that is much less noticeable than metal braces. The ligatures are porous and do not stain the teeth. In addition, they provide a more cosmetic appeal. Ceramic braces generally start at about $4,000+.

The new option in braces is Invisalign, which is a clear, plastic tray that is custom molded to align the teeth. As the name implies, Invisalign is nearly ‘invisible’ and a significantly more aesthetic appearance over metal braces. Invisalign can take a bit longer to move the teeth into place over traditional braces and the patient must be very reliable about wearing them.

Will my braces hurt?

In general, the discomfort associated with braces is generally experienced just after braces are first applied or after an orthodontic adjustment. New braces do take a bit of getting used to and the wires and brackets can be annoying at first. Dentists offer brace wax to help minimize this abrasion. Cool rinses and oral numbing gels can also help.

The other discomfort occurs just after an adjustment. Since the braces are attempting to move the teeth into better alignment, this sensation tends to be mild, more pressure than pain. A little shaved ice or a gentle ice pack applied to the jaw area will help get you through the initial tension.

Are there foods that must be avoided?

Metal and ceramic braces do have some restrictions when it comes to food. Generally, anything very crunchy, chewy, or sticky are a red flag.

Crunchy foods like hard candy, nuts, or very firm chip.

Sticky foods like taffy, caramel, and gummy bears.

Chewy foods like jerky or foods you must bite into like corn on the cob or apples.

If you choose Invisalign braces, there are no dietary restrictions. You can simply remove your trays before eating.

Other Common Questions

Other common questions include the length of time you must wear your braces, which varies. Your orthodontist will provide an estimate based on the type of braces, the extent of the alignment changes necessary, and how well your teeth move in response to the braces. This can range from 1-3 years.

Caring for your teeth takes longer with traditional braces as you must spend time to brush around each brace. Your orthodontist will provide detailed instructions on brushing and flossing. Obviously, with Invisalign braces, you can simply remove your alignment trays and brush and floss normally. Always remember to return your aligners back to their working position to keep the alignment process moving forward.

The biggest concern is paying for the braces. If your insurance does not cover the cost of the braces chosen, there are financing options available. It helps to pay for braces in installments every month rather than getting hit with the full bill all at once.
