Preventing Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal therapyThere’s an old saying that when you smile, the whole world smiles with you.

Periodontitis is nothing to smile about, so knowing how to care for your teeth and gums to prevent gum disease is very important.

Gum disease begins with bacteria in your mouth that is not regularly brushed and flossed away. The bacteria form a sticky film (plaque) that eventually hardens on the teeth in the form of tartar. Once the tartar forms, brushing will not remove it, only a professional cleaning by a dental hygienist will remove it successfully.

The tartar causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, allowing more room for plaque to invade. Eventually, the gums recede, the teeth weaken and loosen, and infection sets in. Smoking, diabetes, hormonal changes, AIDS, and some medications can increase your risk of periodontal disease.

The best prevention is a good offense – brushing and flossing regularly.

If you believe you may have symptoms of gum disease
